Marine Corps is rolling forward with fielding new JLTV

Marines are officially getting a new set of wheels. The Marine Corps will start fielding the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) to Marines, following a decision made Dec. 12 by the Program Executive Officer Land Systems. The JLTV, a program led by the Army, will partially replace the Army and Marine Corps’ aging High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle fleet. The JLTV Family of Vehicles comes in different variants with multiple mission package configurations, all providing protected, sustained, networked mobility that balances payload, performance and protection across the full range of military operations.

Harvested HMMWV parts will save Corps millions, increase survivability of JLTV

A harvesting effort by Program Executive Officer Land Systems and Marine Corps Systems Command could save the Corps millions and make one of its newest vehicles more survivable. The Gunner’s Protection Kit, managed by Infantry Weapons within MCSC’s Portfolio Manager Ground Combat Equipment Systems, is currently installed on High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles. As a cost-savings measure, the kits will be removed from HMMWVs and installed on Joint Light Tactical Vehicles as they are fielded to the fleet next year. Using harvested parts instead of buying new potentially saves the Corps more than $100 million.

Marine Corps Systems Command awarded a contract to produce Amphibious Combat Vehicles—a much-needed modernization to the Marine Corps’ ground combat element. Following a successful Milestone C decision by the Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development, and Acquisition, the contract options worth $198 million will allow BAE Systems to build 30 low rate production vehicles, which will start delivering in the fall of next year. These vehicles will begin the transition of a portion of the Assault Amphibious Vehicle fleet.

Off-road, expeditionary all-terrain vehicles on their way to infantry Marines

Infantry Marines will soon receive ultralight off-road vehicles that will improve mission readiness by providing rapid logistics support in the field. Program Executive Officer Land Systems, the Corps’ acquisition arm for major land programs, is expected to deliver 144 Utility Task Vehicles to the regiment-level starting later this month—a mere six months from contract award.

Marine Corps bids farewell to first, only PEO

After nearly 10 years as the Marine Corps first and only Program Executive Officer, the man charged with building the organization is moving on to his next challenge. William “Bill” Taylor, PEO Land Systems and a member of the Senior Executive Service, was recently selected to be the next assistant deputy commandant for Sustainment for Marine Corps Aviation. Taylor relinquished his responsibilities to acting PEO LS Col. Andrew Bianca June 21. As the former aviator “departed the pattern,” he left knowing the programs he initiated and those that were handed off to him are all on solid footing, and that both Marine Corps and DoD leaders have a better understanding and appreciation of Marine Corps acquisition.
